Greene County High School principal had great news to share with the board of education at the board’s regular meeting Wednesday. Average scores for the 2014 ACT have been released, and GCHS students scored higher than the state average in every content area.
Phillips provided average scores, with the GCHS score listed first, followed by the state average: English, 22.4, 21.5; math, 21.8, 21.4; reading, 24.1, 22.5; science, 23.2, 22.2; and the composite score, 23.1, 22.0. Forty-six GCHS students, or about half the graduating class of 2014, took the ACT.
“Those are overall good scores, and I’m proud of the students for that,” Phillips said.
This is the sixth time in 10 years Jefferson-Scranton/Greene County students have claimed that right to brag. Previous years in the last 10 are 2004, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012.
According to act.org, 68 percent of Iowa high school students took the test. Iowa’s average composite score of 22.0 ranks 20th among the 50 states. Massachusetts students scored the highest, with an average composite score of 24.3. New Hampshire and Connecticut were close behind at 24.2.
